Research has uncovered the worrying fact
that even when healthy foods are chosen,
chances are there will be a deficiency
of vital vitamins and minerals.
Researchers say that children are not
getting enough nutrients and healthy
fats from their diet, and this may
affect their long-term health. They also
believe there is a need for children to
improve their nutrient intake.
Many children have alarmingly low
intakes of the
vitamins and minerals that are
essential for growth. The latest
National Nutrition Survey
confirms that significant numbers of
children are getting less than the
Recommended Dietary Intake (RDI) of
nutrients needed to prevent illness.
Good Health Naturally has addressed this
problem with the launch of
Jurassic Juice™. ...

You
do not need to be told that the
nutritional content of children’s diets
is getting worse by the day —
the
subject dominates health pages and
headlines. Now it seems that even the
staple foods we trusted to give our
children balance within their diets may be
at fault. A study has shown that modern
farming methods are depleting produce of
the nutrients essential for human health.

Oil Made My Kids Clever' |

Sales
of fish
oil supplements are rocketing after a
telly programme revealed they could boost
children’s attention spans and help
behaviour problems, writes Sally Janes.
Shops
such as Boots recorded a 300 per cent jump
in sales following last week’s episode
of the BBC show, Child Of Our Time. And
other studies have shown that high-grade
oils found in fish such as salmon,
mackerel, herring and fresh tuna can give
a major boost to kids under-achieving in
their studies.
...
....To
test the supplements, Sun Health asked
mum-of-four Ann Duffield, of Durham, to
give her children high-concentration fish
oils.
Her
eight-year-old triplets Megan, Michael and
Ellie and their sister Ivy, ten, were all
struggling with schoolwork before the
experiment....

The
human brain is pretty amazing, but most
fascinating of all is a child's brain. In
the first few years the brain cells are
linking up and making billions of
connections.
At
this young age children are like sponges,
absorbing information at a rate that is
truly fantastic. In fact, a three-year-old
has a brain that is twice as active as an
adult's. This activity creates a huge
metabolic demand on resources. In an adult,
a fifth of energy is diverted to the brain.
Because children's brains are relatively
much larger than an adult's (as a ratio of
body size) this increases the demands made
on energy levels considerably. This is one
reason that the calories a child needs,
again compared to adult/body ratio, is high....

Managing
children’s nutrition is a constant
struggle for many parents. With many
Australian children overweight and many
young Australians getting less than their
recommended dietary intake of essential
vitamins and minerals, it’s more important
than ever to be aware of what kids need to
start the year well....

Dyslexia
and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) cause great distress to untold
numbers of children – and their parents.
These
stressful developmental conditions are far
more common than you would expect, affecting
– to some degree – an alarmingly high
number of school-aged children (up to 20 per
cent) and accounting for the majority of
minors with special educational needs.
But
now it’s been announced that deficiencies
in a family of micronutrients, called essential
fatty acids (found in fish oil and
evening primrose oil) may cause dyslexia and
ADHD. In clinical trials, ADHD children
treated with fatty acids had a reduction in
symptoms....

Multivitamins & Minerals

for Young Children |

Numerous
studies suggest that young children are
deficient in iron, zinc, calcium and other
micronutrients.
Dr
Susan B Roberts, Professor of Nutrition and
Psychiatry at Tufts University, Boston and
Dr Melvin B Heyman, Professor of Pediatrics
at the University of California, San
Francisco, reviewed studies revealing that
young children are not receiving adequate
nutrients from their diets.
"A
recent report suggests that intakes are low
in both home food and food provided at day
care centers. Most of the young children in
that study could not have obtained adequate
intakes of key micronutrients without major
dietary changes"....

The Role of Vitamins & Mineral

Supplements in Health |

Department of
Health recommendations:
“Supplementation
with certain vitamins
is recommended by the Department of Health
for children from 6 months to 5 years If you
think that their diet is not meeting your
nutrient requirements, a multivitamin and
mineral supplement may be of benefit”
The
number of people taking supplements in the
UK is rising and reflects the growing
awareness about the important role that diet
plays in maintaining good health.
It
is clear that many of us can benefit from
supplements at certain times in our lives,
particularly when there is an increased
requirement for certain nutrients
or when there is likely to be an inadequate
dietary intake. Examples of groups for whom
they can be useful include young children
and adolescents; pregnant and breast-feeding
women; house-bound or institutionalised
elderly people; vegans; smokers;
heavy drinkers; people who are chronically ill
or recovering from a recent illness and
anybody on a restrictive diet.

IS fish good for the brain? |

"We
look at the effect of essential fatty acids,
found in fish oils, on brain function and
developmental disorders of learning and
behaviour".
‘Fish
is good for the brain’
- an old wives tale, yes, but it seems our
grandmothers’ grandmothers knew what they
were talking about. A scientific study
of 100 children, with learning difficulty,
from 12 Durham Schools, is indicating that
the oil from carnivorous fish like salmon,
mackerel and herring can boost brainpower
and learning ability. The Durham Trial by Dr
Alex Richardson is expected to show an
improvement in school performance for over
40% of children.
Dr Richardson is a leading expert on the
effect of fish oils on developmental
disorders like dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD,
conditions which are now estimated to affect
around 10 million people in Britain – and
the results are promising....

Vitamins

Antioxidant
vitamins C and E restore the function of the
lining of blood vessels in children with a
high blood fat level.
Excess
fatty substances in the blood (hyperlipidaemia)
is associated with abnormalities of the
lining of blood vessels (endothelial
dysfunction) and can lead to hardening of
the arteries and heart disease (atherosclerosis).

Asthma

In
a large study of United States youth,
vitamin C, beta carotene and selenium were
associated with reduced risk of asthma.
Asthma
appears to be on the increase worldwide,
especially in children aged 18 years or
younger. Scientists believe that dietary
factors, including antioxidants (vitamin E,
beta carotene, vitamin C and selenium) may
play a role, either in the origin of asthma
and/or the progression of the disease, and
that the association of antioxidants to
asthma would vary with exposure to cigarette
smoke...
